The history of the property

Built in 1902 as the private residence of Charles Van Vleck, the beautiful location was later converted into a residential hotel, The Georgian Inn, for short stays in the 1940s. At that time, the Montclair branch of the Alliance Française de Institut Français (FIAF) moved its headquarters from New Jersey to Queen Anne’s carriage in the back.

In 2008, the historic building was granted monument status and in 2012, after its purchase, the hostel underwent a complete renovation. Bobbi and Steven designed each of the bedrooms to have a bespoke look and feel that is distinctly different from the others. With a designer spirit and a sophisticated, worldly and chic style, expect uncompromising comfort and touches of luxury in every space. Inspired by Bobbi and Steven’s love for travel.

The stained glass windows were too amazing to remove, so the team designed around them instead – making them a focal point of the space. The breathtaking high ceilings continue throughout the inn.

The vision of the project was to create a comfortable, interesting and constantly evolving hotel.

Regarding the design of the hostel, as Creative Director Bobbi managed not only to retain but enrich the natural charm of the place with a modern touch. Think – a Tudor-style aesthetic with warm tones and Instagrammable touches, like the sculptural beige resin side table set alongside a timeless black leather sofa and tile-covered accent chairs.

The hostel is an ideal location for weddings and / or wedding photos. Wedding guests can even stay at the hostel!

Guests are greeted with a grand staircase that appears to have been torn from a bustling Victorian-era romance. Portraits of both familiar and unfamiliar faces hang throughout the inn, adding an unexpected element to the experience. It is clear that thought has entered every detail of the space, including the personal touches.

The property’s best feature + best kept secret is arguably an unassuming room tucked away in the library labeled ‘cupboard’ that stores pure astonishment – candy, every type of chocolate, and lick you can Think are beautifully displayed shelf after shelf for guests to indulge in their indulgence before bed. A candy and chocolate lover herself, the hidden candy cupboard was one of Bobbi Brown’s personal stamps on the inn. They really thought of everything!
