Ardmore’s new holiday tradition is back for the second year. Starting tonight and returning for the next two Thursdays, the Ardmore Main Street Authority will be offering free horse-drawn carriage rides in the Depot District. The event will coincide with several downtown retailers that will remain open for extended hours.
AMSA Chief Executive Officer Allison Meredith said the horse-drawn carriage rides were extremely popular last year with hundreds of people coming to the city center to take advantage of the occasion. In fact, it turned out to be so popular that they decided to add a third car this year to help cut wait times.
“Last year with just the two cars the lines were a bit long so we added a third to try and help with that,” said Meredith. “The best places to get on would be the Charles B. Smith parking lot or the Mercy Train. Cars will drop you off at any business or location along the route you wish to take.”
The Charles B. Smith parking lot will be particularly busy next Thursday evening. Live reindeer will be on site from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for children and families to see and have fun.
Depot District’s entertainment isn’t limited to Thursday nights, as this year Christmas-themed selfie stations have been added at various locations on Main Street to encourage everyone to have fun and snap photos.
“We’ve been working over the past few weeks to bring together four selfie stations scattered along Main Street,” Meredith said. “We’re asking those who take a photo to tag us on our social media, and we’ll pick winners for a prize.”
In addition to creating a fun activity for the community, Meredith said she hopes the horse-drawn carriage rides and selfie stations will encourage more people to come downtown and see all the Depot District has to offer. .
“We really love seeing the people downtown and having fun, and this will be the perfect opportunity to support our local small businesses and explore our fantastic stores and restaurants,” said Meredith.
Free carriage rides in the Depot District will run from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on December 9, 16 and 23. The reindeer will be at the Charles B. Smith parking lot located between C and B streets from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 16.
