Michelin Guide 2022: No new stars for Yorkshire but seven restaurants keep theirs and new openings hailed

The 2022 Michelin Guide was released today and there was some disappointing news for Yorkshire, with no new stars awarded to restaurants in the area.

However, seven restaurants have retained theirs: the businesses of Tommy Banks, The Black Swan in Oldstead and Roots in York; The Pipe and Glass in South Dalton, near Beverley (Chief James Mackenzie); The Man Behind the Curtain in Leeds (Chief Michael O’Hare); The Angel in Hetton (leader Michael Wignall); Grantley Hall near Ripon (Chef Shaun Rankin) and The Star Inn at Harome (Chef Andrew Pern).

L’Etoile is set to be closed for nearly a year after a fire tore through the thatched-roof inn last fall, but its inclusion in the Guide is a gesture of solidarity from Michelin and the gastronomic community.

Pern’s other businesses, Star Inn the City in York and Star Inn the Harbor in Whitby, appear in the general section of the Guide.

The awarding of Bib Gourmands – the accolade below one star – was also disappointing, with no new Bibs announced and only three fine dining destinations in Yorkshire still holding them; Skosh in York, Prashad in Drighlington and the Hope and Anchor in South Ferriby.

In the Guide’s general recommendations, around 50 Yorkshire entries are included this year, including new openings from 2021 such as Bantam in Helmsley and Homestead Kitchen in Goathland. Leeds chef Elizabeth Cottam’s HOME restaurant and Boston Spa’s bakery CORA are both included, the latter for the first time, but her Kirkgate Market business The Owl, which appeared previously, has been omitted.

Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield, Hull, Scarborough and Doncaster are not represented in the Guide at all.
