OhioHealth makes new investments in West Columbus

Last month, Ohio Health Doctors Hospital bought the medical practice building opposite the hospital, located at 5109 Broad Street West. Renovations to this building will follow. Beginning in January 2022, OhioHealth will begin planning and design work for a complete renovation at the recently purchased medical office building attached to the hospital located in 5131 Beacon Hill Road. The investment will bring more outpatient services to the West End, allowing Doctors Hospital to recruit new doctors and improve the patient experience.

This investment brings OhioHealth’s commitment to nearly $75 million over just over a decade, ensuring patients have access to the right care at the right time, and more importantly, in the right place.

“OhioHealth Doctors Hospital is not just a West Side Hospital, we are The West Side Hospital,” Lindsey Osting, said the president of the OhioHealth Doctors Hospital. “Our commitment has never wavered for our patients and their families. We believe that access to quality health care should not just happen in pockets of our communities, but should happen everywhere. We are excited about this next chapter and want people on the West Side to know that we hear you, we see your needs, and we will never stop delivering what you want and deserve from a healthcare system and hospital.

In addition to this latest commitment, OhioHealth completed a three-year surgical department upgrade and built a 12-bed observation unit in 2016. This comes on the heels of a project that doubled the size of the department. Doctors Hospital emergency room and added classrooms and labs in 2010.

“We’re definitely proud of what we’ve done with the expansions and the buildings, but it’s just bricks and mortar,” Osting said. “The real strength of this investment over more than a decade is in our patient access and journeys, and a commitment to our teams at Doctors Hospital.”

The West Side OhioHealth footprint also includes the ChenMed partnership. Dedicated Centers bring ChenMed’s proven approach to value-based care to underserved neighborhoods in Columbus that have long needed personalized primary care to improve the lives of middle-to-low-income at-risk seniors. One of the three centers is located at 50 North Wilson Road.

“Quality health care in your community and close to home is crucial,” said Cathy Schmelzer, owner of Carriage House of Flowers. “Knowing that OhioHealth is here and committed to being here for the long haul means everything. They’re keeping community leaders, businesses, and other partners informed about what’s happening, what the future holds, and we’re supporting this investment and future partnerships.

Along with investing in healthcare, Doctors Hospital is also finding ways to have other impacts in the community. Doctors Hospital recently committed $25,000 to the One Field project which will create a grass field providing access for people with special needs for soccer, football and other field sports. This, along with mobile COVID-19 vaccination clinics and the continued support of the Westland Area Business Association (WABA), Doctors Hospital is a vital part of West Columbus’ continued success.

“We’ve been in this community for 50 years and we’re more excited than ever to see what these commitments mean for the long-term success of West Columbus,” Osting said.
